Apple iMac Wall Mount - VESA Adapter Bracket Aluminum iMac 20, Intel iMac G5

>> Monday, October 5, 2009

The Power Mac G5 is the latest of Apple Computer advanced system. In fact, it is considered by many as not only the fastest Mac available, but the best PC to date. By using a liquid cooling system, the G5 is able to take its powerful dual processors running cool and fast. Currently, dual processors come in speeds of 1.8 GHz, 2 GHz and 2.5 GHz. Do not let GHz confound you, though. These systems have been off the fastest Pentium 4 systems commonly used in applications like Photoshop.
The ability to mount the iMac on a wall or any other editing system requires that the iMac has a VESA compliant interface to attach. For the size and weight of the iMac, it is suggested that this provides an interface 100 x 100mm holes for fixing. In addition, to remain the industry standard should use these holes 4 mm screws.

Not long ago, a client wanted their iMac computer mounted on the wall to save the workspace and it was assumed that there was support for the VESA card available from Apple. When it came time to purchase the VESA adapter kits, we found these kits have been discontinued or not available to all. To find the necessary arm mounts and wall-mount devices is easy, but attaching the iMac to those systems has been mounting a new challenge.

Further investigation reveled there are many iMac users looking for the solution VESA same card, but without winning. It became obvious that to take into account the needs of customers, I need to create an adapter kit from scratch. In reviewing the draft kit adapter with the client and the people I had talked online a few requirements for the kit have been identified. The 3 best conditions are:

(1) The adapter kit does not require the bar to be removed from the iMac. This allows the user the option not to mount their iMac to save space, but also use the iMac as a portable system as the stand remains in tact.

(2) The adapter kit is interchangeable with the 17 inch and 20 inch iMac computers, and provide a simple method for typing.

(3) VESA adapter kit should be aesthetically suitable for the elegant iMac.

These and other requirements were considered when developing the VESA Adapter Kit for iMac, and finally met. The adapter kit provides a solution for the VESA mounting two 17-inch and 20 inch iMac, including the new aluminum iMac 20. There would be no need to buy a new kit during the transition to a new model. The interface support provides the means 100 x 100mm necessary for fixing and mounting the plate to the iMac is very simple and requires no changes to the iMac. The kit is aesthetically appropriate and merges with the iMac.

CyberPower announces new range of overclocked Core i5, i7-based gaming rigs

>> Tuesday, September 8, 2009

Not content with a pricey system powered by the latest and greatest Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor? Then you're just sort of madcap individual that CyberPower is looking for, as it has rolled out a new range of gaming rigs packing factory overclocked versions of said processors. That includes no less than five new models in Gamer Xtreme 1000 to 5000 series, which will be available with your choice of Core i5 750 (2.66GHz), i7 860 (2.80 GHz), or i7 870 (2.93 GHz) processors, and one of a number of different P55 chipset motherboards from manufacturers including Gigabyte, ASUS, EVGA, and MSI. Otherwise, you can expect some fairly high-end and fully configurable options across the board, and some equally high-end price tags for most of those options, although you can apparently get in on the base level for just $749.

Intel's new Core i7, Core i5 desktop chips bring faster CPUs to the maintream

Intel put itself far ahead of AMD technically last year with its Core i7 desktop CPUs, but the high-end prices for the Core i7 900 series made Intel's most advanced chip architecture more of a luxury than an industry standard. Monday's announcement of Intel's new, more affordable Core i7 800 series chips, as well as an even cheaper Core i5 CPU, will likely lead to Intel's most advanced chip penetrating the mainstream retail market.

Intel has three new chips to announce, as well as the new Intel P55 Express motherboard chipset to support them. The new Core i7's include the $562 2.93GHz Core i7 870, the $284 Core i7 860 at 2.8GHz, as well as the $196 2.6GHz Core i5 750 chip. Each is essentially a stripped-down version of its counterpart from the Core i7 900 series, the most affordable of which, the 2.66GHz Core i7 920, starts at about $280.

The technical sacrifices in the new chips are relatively minor. The new Core i7's have a double-channel memory interface, as opposed to triple-channel RAM in the Core i7 900's. That means new Core i7-based PC owners won't have quite as much RAM throughput, but they also save money by only having to buy two sticks of DDR3 at a time, as opposed to three with Core i7 900.

(Credit: Intel)

The sole Core i5 chip has the same two-channel memory limit, and Intel has also stripped out the Hyperthreading capability. Hyperthreading is an Intel technique that effectively doubles the number of processing threads (adding four virtual threads to the four physical CPU cores) depending on the workload. Heavy multitaskers and those who use multithreaded software will feel the loss here, although Intel's current mainstream Core 2 Quad family, which the Core i5 may replace, has no Hyperthreading either.

To build a desktop PC around either new chip, you'll also need a new motherboard using Intel's P55 Express chipset. We've already mentioned the change to the memory interface. The next most significant change has to do with the graphics bandwidth.

Like the old Core i7-compatible Intel X58-chipset motherboards, the P55 Express boards support multiple graphics cards via Nvidia's SLI and AMD's CrossFireX technologies. The difference with P55 is that you only get half the graphics data bandwidth as with X58. You still get full 16x PCI Express throughput if you use a single card on P55 Express, but install two cards and the graphics slots become two 8x slots, as opposed to full dual-16x on X58.

PC gamers on the cusp of purchasing a mainstream or a higher-end gaming PC may face a conundrum because of the graphics bandwidth limit. But for most price-sensitive gamers, one decent midrange 3D card will provide a more than adequate gaming experience, so the graphics bandwidth limit isn't a major loss for the new chipset's intended market.

So how fast are these new CPUs? We tested a PC from Falcon Northwest Talon with a Core i7 860 overclocked from 2.8GHz to 3.39GHz and found that it competed well against Core i7 920-based PCs that cost about $500 more. You can read the full review here. We also have a $1,300 Core i7 860-based system from Velocity Micro on deck for later this week.

For standalone chip reviews, PC Games Hardware found the Core i7 860 as fast or faster than either the Core i7 920, or AMD's Phenom II X4 965 on most of its benchmarks. The Core i5 even squeezed out a few wins of its own. The other enthusiasts sites haven't posted their coverage yet, and we'll add the appropriate links as other reviews come online, but the early results indicate that the new Core i7 and Core i5 will achieve Intel's goal of bringing its latest architecture available to mainstream consumers in a competitive package.

OWC shoves 750GB hard drive into Mercury On-The-Go Pro

>> Saturday, September 5, 2009

Other World Computing's Mercury On-The-Go lineup has always struck us as somewhat overpriced and completely overstyled, but it's tough to argue with 750GB of space in a bus-powered portable drive. The newest addition to the company's On-The-Go Pro range is a 750GB model that spins at 5200RPMs and packs 8MB of cache; we won't even begin to tell you what all you could fit on three-quarters of a terabyte, but if your imagination already has you tempted, you can snag one now for as low as $229.99 if you're kosher with a USB 2.0-only configuration.

SSD shootout, round III: OCZ, Corsair and PhotoFast butt heads

>> Wednesday, September 2, 2009

Like clockwork, we've stumbled upon yet another updated SSD shootout almost a year to the day since the last one, and nearly two years since the first. Since 2008, we've seen OCZ introduce a new "garbage collection" algorithm for its Vertex Series 120GB SSD, Corsair introduce its P64 and PhotoFast make waves with its supposedly speedy G-Monster-V5. The benchmarking gurus over at HotHardware had the patience to sit 'em all down and break out the rulers, and the long and short of it is this: the Vertex Turbo and G-Monster V5 bested the Corsair, with the PhotoFast drive in particular showing remarkably strong performance in read / write tests. Of course, all of the units were quite a bit quicker than traditional HDDs, but the folks at HH maintained that SSD pricing is still way out of reach for many consumers. But hey, if you've got the means to lay down $3 per gigabyte, feel free to tap that read link and ingest.
